AbstractThe 35 points of this policy statement recommend categories of library personnel, together with levels of training and education appropriate to the preparation of personnel for these categories that will support the highest standards of library service for all kinds of libraries, as well as the most effective use of the variety of skills and qualifications needed to provide it. The first five points address the concepts of library services and meeting library service goals by utilizing skills from all levels of library personnel. Points 6 through 19 discuss job titles to represent broad categories within which several promotional steps exist; these points establish a definition of "librarian" as a professional with a master's degree; describe staff appointments; explain qualifications of all job categories; and suggest ways of determining salary levels. A table depicts the categories of professional and supportive personnel, and a figure illustrates a career "lattice." Points 20 through 32 focus on formal education--the current educational requirements to determine a job applicant's background, possible evolution of these requirements as library services change and expand, library schools' responsibility to experiment with new curricula, and the role of research in the profession. Points 33 through 35 focus on the importance of continuing education for all levels of library personnel. (SD)
