AbstractThis study uses 1980 Census information and post-Census trends to develop an information base for the Latino community in the tri-state region of Southern New York, Northern New Jersey, and Western Connecticut. This reference base provides a demographic and socioeconomic profile of the Latino community in the following categories: (1) the increasing Latino presence in the tri-state region; (2) growth and diversity of the Latino community; (3) dynamics and growth of the community, both in terms of immigration and natural increase; and (4) the national and regional Latino population growth outlook. The study reports its findings on conditions of Latino family life in the following key areas: (1) characteristics of household population; (2) age and gender by ethnicity; (3) household characteristics of Latino youths; (4) marital patterns; (5) household size and type; (6) subfamilies; (7) English speaking ability; (8) educational attainment; (9) labor force participation and occupations; (10) household income and poverty status; and (11) tenure and type of housing. On the basis of its findings, the report suggests the following human service needs of the Latino community: (1) economic advancement programs; (2) housing development programs; (3) child care services; (4) services for the elderly; and (5) increased educational opportunities, with emphasis on bilingual and bicultural services. The study includes 17 graphs, tables, and charts. (AF)
