AbstractBetween September and December 1986, the Marine Institute in Newfoundland, Canada, used a "projects approach" to train aquaculture workers for 10 new salmon farms to be opened in spring 1987 by a producers' cooperative. The projects approach combined instruction in the aquaculture skills needed to operate a salmon farm and the entrepreneurial skills necessary to set up and manage a farm successfully. Every student in the program was required to prepare an acceptable business plan for his/her own farm, including a statement of purpose, a description of the business, a marketing strategy, a management plan, and complete financial projections for the first three years of operation. The inclusion of the business plan as a program requirement changed the curriculum from a traditional biology-centered model to a business-centered model. This business orientation was also stressed in a required business course, which addressed such topics as "Assessing Your Potential as an Entrepreneur,""Arranging Financing,""Maintaining Complete and Accurate Records." Other course requirements included "Aquaculture Technology,""Fish Culture,""Fish Health," and "Fish Handling." The same approach was used by the Marine Institute for its five-week "Fundamentals of Longline Mussel Culture Program" in 1987 and 1988. Course descriptions are attached. (AJL)
