Abstract | A study examined the relationship between vocational-technical education (including guidance) and apprenticeship. The existing literature was examined, and key issues in this relationship were identified. These issues were then validated through personal interviews with a sample of state guidance leaders. The information gathered during these interviews was then used as the basis for formulating recommendations to the Department of Labor concerning actions that could improve collaboration between vocational-technical education and apprenticeship. The principal barriers to collaboration identified were: (1) the apprenticeship selection process, (2) the perceived inadequacy of vocational-technical training, (3) the lack of awareness of and communication with other training entities, and (4) turf issues. The following five activities for improving the credibility, quality, and scope of apprenticeship training were identified: information exchange, research, curriculum development, personal development, and guidance career information and assessment.
