AbstractThis publication is an annotated guide to software for teaching adult literacy recommended by the Adult Basic Skills Technology (ABST) Project. The ABST Project was initiated in 1982 as the Region X Adult Education Software Project, an effort by the State Adult Basic Education Departments of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska to provide adult basic education sites with the technical expertise to use computer technology with their students. The featured programs include drill and practice, simulations, educational games, word processing programs, and tutorials. They serve a variety of computers and range from free to $1,000 or more in price. The featured software is listed alphabetically and by instructional category (English, reading, mathematics). The annotated remarks include title, publisher, cost, type of computer, subject area, use, descriptions, and the strengths and weaknesses of the individual programs. The guide also includes a resources section divided into four categories: technical information on computer use, listings of reviewed software, resources (including publishers' addresses), and a comment form.
