| Abstract | Eighteen foreign policy topics are presented in this book to provide voters, officeholders, candidates, students, and teachers with background information, facts, and U.S. foreign policies. A fact list, historical background information, current administration policy, and policy alternatives are described for most of these topics. Part 1 discusses leadership in terms of the U.S. presidency, Congress, and foreign policy. Part 2 examines national security in relation to: (1) the arms race and control; (2) the defense budget and major weapons systems; and (3) nuclear proliferation. Economic and social issues are described in part 3 in terms of: (1) jobs and international trade; (2) oil and energy; (3) the international debt crisis; and (4) immigration and refugees. Part 4 considers critical world regions, including the USSR, the Atlantic Alliance, Lebanon and Israel, Iran and Iraq, Central America, Japan, China and Taiwan, South Africa and Namibia, and developing nations. Part 5 examines the relationship of the United States to the United Nations. Maps, pictures, and charts are included, and a selected bibliography is provided for each topic. (JHP) |
