| Abstract | The result of a two-week consultant mission to the South East Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) at Bogor, Indonesia, this study explored the feasibility of applying microcomputers to library and information work in the Clearing House for Information Division of BIOTROP, which has a regional responsibility for the collection, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of tropical biological information. The study focused on: (1) the identification of functions that are considered good candidates for automation (these were found to be cataloging, serials control, exchange and mailing list management, database creation, current awareness listing, interactive search, thesaurus development, and ongoing research information systems); (2) the determination of major requirements that systems considered for automation would need to satisfy; (3) the consideration of what microcomputer hardware and software would be needed to meet systems' requirements; (4) presentation of data pertaining to availability of microcomputers in Indonesia; (5) examination of the feasibility of on-line access to external databases; and (6) suggestions for an action plan and budget for a project to implement microcomputer-based systems in the clearinghouse. Major requirements that microcomputer-based systems in each of these areas should satisfy are delineated and discussed, the methodology is presented, and six figures and a data sheet are appended.
