Abstract | The transition of college graduates to the world of work in the Sudan was studied as a follow-up of earlier research on the relation of education and employment. Of concern were: higher education's response to the changing needs of Sudanese society; students' choices in higher education and their performance; the match between students' qualifications and job requirements; and the correspondence between students' expectations and achievements in the work world. Enrollments by broad fields of study were identified, along with enrollments by region and province. The unit cost method was employed to assess the cost of higher education. The attitudes of students, graduates, and employers were determined using questionnaires, which are appended. The conceptual framework for these surveys is discussed, with attention to individual and family characteristics, community characteristics, parental education, occupation and income, and educational and occupational background. Final-year secondary school students who were to enter college were surveyed as well as college students. Background information on the Sudanese economy and educational system is included. (SW) |
