AbstractThis monograph (developed along with an accompanying slide presentation) is designed to stimulate the creative thinking of educational policymakers in response to the massive and rapid social upheavals occurring in the economy and at home--and consequently among the students themselves. After a brief introductory overview of these changes and their implications for education, part 2 presents and discusses pertinent statistical information on the new realities: changing populations and enrollment, new definitions of family, and the world in which students live. The latter discussion focuses on statistics with respect to the dropout rate, alcohol and drug abuse, and teen suicide, while the final discussion, "Where Are the Teachers?" documents the growing gap between supply and demand for teachers. Part 3 provides a series of strategies and model programs for responding to these new realities. The first discussion focuses on student problems: keeping "at risk" students in school, curbing drug and alcohol abuse, and addressing the issue of teen suicide. Subsequent discussions focus on early childhood education, some hopeful indications for teacher supply, the promise of computers and technology, cooperation between schools and business, parents' involvement, and educational finance reform. A bibliography is included. (TE)
