AbstractIn fall 1986, a pilot honors program was initiated in the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) to meet the needs of highly motivated students. A four-part evaluation of the pilot project was conducted in 1987, involving a survey of the educational and demographic background of all honors students conducted during the beginning of the semester; a telephone survey of all students who dropped an honors class; a student evaluation of honors courses and instructors; and an evaluation of the course, program administration, and students by the faculty. Findings of the evaluation included the following: (1) 276 students enrolled in the honors program in spring 1987; (2) 44.4% of honors students were over 30 years of age in contrast to 37.6% of the general student population, and 65% had previous college experience; (3) 17% indicated that the Honors Program was one of their reasons for enrolling at the college; (4) by the end of the spring term, 91 (34.8%) of the honors students had withdrawn, with the most common reason given being conflict with work schedule; (5) overall, 28.1% of the students who enrolled in the Honors Program in spring 1987 did not qualify for the program; and (6) in general, students were enthusiastic about the Honors Program, expessing appreciation for the individualized instruction, small class size, intellectual challenge, and high standards. Questionnaires and student comments are included. (UCM)
