AbstractThe conceptual groundwork needed to examine the impact of technology, primarily microcomputers, on student learning is presented. Medium, method, and context are tied with a science of design. In section I, research on technology in higher education is reviewed, medium and method are defined, and interaction with context is discussed. Taxonomies on instructional contexts and design are considered in section II, including the purpose of a taxonomy, instructional contexts (learner aptitudes, learning tasks, and situations), and instructional designs. In the final section the taxonomy is used to identify and describe classes (tutorials, guided simulations, exploratory environments, cognitive tools, graphics, motivation, user interface, and feedback) of computer applications, or designs, and the instructional situations for which each might be most effectively used. A research agenda is provided from which NCRIPTAL (National Center for Research to Improve Postsecondary Teaching and Learning) researchers will work. One hunred and fifty references are included.
