Abstract | Progress toward meeting the recommendations for quality improvements made by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) in 1981 in "The Need for Quality" is reviewed, and suggestions for state actions to improve undergraduate education in the SREB states are offered. High school graduation requirements in SREB states are identified, and information is provided on: special recognition programs for high school graduates; advanced placement programs for public school students; student testing in grades 9-12; the high school dropout rate; assessing college students' performance; and the percentage of minority teachers. Recommendations are considered concerning: high school preparation and achievement; units of high school work needed for college admission; standards to begin college-level coursework; establishing placement standards; starting and supporting school-college programs; expanding the pool of teachers; alternative certification for teachers; performance standards to enter teaching; and continuing certification of classroom teachers. Initiatives for preservice teacher education and school leadership are addressed, along with teacher salaries. (SW) |
