Abstract | A study looks at the economic, social, cultural, and political factors involved in conflicts between New Brunswick language communities in the last two decades. The demographic, economic, cultural, and political relationships between the French and English language communities are presented and discussed in terms of political matters and principal themes of conflict. Public policy, legislation, and legislative interpretation relating to language is analyzed, and the evolution of language conflicts is chronicled. Special attention is given to the amount of power available to the Acadian community to regulate its own linguistic development. The study found that economic status, access to the provincial cultural capital, and voice in collective decision-making exacerbated an existing demographic imbalance. Two statistically oriented appendixes analyze the connection between linguistic characteristis and incomes of New Brunswick residents and degree of access to the mass media of the various linguistic groups.
