AbstractIn brainstorming a group attempts to find a solution for a specific problem by amassing all the ideas spontaneously contributed by members. Brainstorming is recommended when the generation of ideas will be beneficial to the solution of problems. Four fundamental rules of brainstorming include: (1) criticism is not allowed during the thinking phase; (2) unconventional, wild ideas are encouraged; (3) quantity of ideas are sought; and (4) members are encouraged to combine and improve previous ideas. Ideas should be recorded in a reportorial manner. These ideas can be evaluated by the same or another group. The problem should be brief and to the point. Experts and amateurs should be included in the group. Experts disagree about whether or not the problem should be given to the group members before the brainstorming session. Advantagaes of brainstorming include participant enjoyment of the hard work, increase in initiative, and accomplishment of a task by a group in a shorter time than an individual would take. Disadvantages of brainstorming include forgetting the overall objective and group members using the session to pool knowledge rather than produce ideas. The value of brainstorming as an idea-getting technique has been proven time and time again. (ABL)
