| Abstract | The proceedings of a colloquium examining the status of French in Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) begin with an overview of the issues concerning the role of French in this multilingual, regional, cooperative union and a brief look at the future of French in the contemporary world. Discussions of the status of French in the six subregions of Benelux (Brussels, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Flanders, Wallonia, and the Eastern Cantons) follow. These discussions focus on significant sociopolitical, industrial, and linguistic factors, as well as influences on language use and maintenance. The proceedings conclude with a call for firm policy and action on behalf of the French language on the part of the participating jurisdictions. (MSE) |
