Abstract | This instructional manual consists of materials for use in implementing a computer-assisted instructional program in reading skills development for adult nonreaders. Discussed first are the project during which this instructional program and manual were developed and the goals of the computer-assisted beginning reading program, a major feature of which is the use of interactive graphics and sound (voice) tutorials. The next section of the guide includes a description of the major components of the program and detailed instructions for their use. These components are interactive graphic cards, five floppy disks for TRS-80 microcomputer, and 24 audiocassettes. Concluding the guide are 954 interactive graphic cards that are included in the program for the purpose of helping students develop skills in the following areas: forming compound words, plurals, and contractions; identifying root words, prefixes, suffixes, and possessives; dividing words into syllables; identifying and using various parts of speech; recognizing homonyms; discriminating between synonyms and antonyms; discovering context; using negatives; finding the main idea; recalling details; following sequences; following directions; locating answers; reading in context; drawing conclusions; inferring; identifying cause and effect; and predicting outcomes.
