Abstract | Science educators from Bangladesh, China, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Korea, and Sri Lanka met to: (1) review current experiences in the preparation of science teachers and teacher educators and their continuing education in the nine countries, as well as to consider major trends, issues, and problems related to the training and retraining of science teachers and teacher educators; (2) define and illustrate the concept of "open competence"; (3) identify the competencies and attitudes needed by science teachers and science teacher educators to cope with changes in science education; (4) suggest strategies for designing and developing science teacher education programs at the pre-service, in-service, and continuing education levels, with focus on developing open competence; and (5) make suggestions for follow-up inter-country cooperative activities and national actions. Each of these areas is addressed in separate chapters of this five-chapter report. A list of participants, resource persons, and observers is included. (JN) |
