Abstract	This booklet sets forth the provisions of the South Carolina Education Improvement Act. Statements of standards mandated by the State in the following areas are presented: (1) increasing academic standards; (2) strengthening student discipline and attendance; (3) providing more effective use of classroom learning time; (4) providing programs of excellence for talented students; (5) providing more relevant vocational training programs; (6) providing programs for handicapped students; (7) requiring exit exam for graduation; (8) enacting a promotion policy; (9) improving basic skills in all grades; (10) establishing alcohol and drug abuse programs in schools; (11) establishing pupil-teacher ratios; (12) increasing the number of highly qualified persons going into the teaching profession; (13) raising teacher salaries to attract and hold qualified persons; (14) improving training of current and prospective teachers; (15) maximizing the utilization of teaching time and talent; (16) recruiting most able candidates to become principals and administrators; (17) improving training and evaluation of prospective and current school administators; (18) evaluating and rewarding schools and school districts based on measurable performance and progress; (19) planning of focusing the schools and school districts on instructional improvement and the effective use of resources; (20) monitoring annually the implement of the educational improvement program; (21) authorization of intervention by State Superintendents of Education where quality of education in a local school is impaired; (22) strengthing parent involvement; (23) increasing business and industry participation; (24) broadening community involvement; and (25) performing pressing repairs, renovations, and construction on school buildings.
