Abstract | A student-centered, cross-disciplinary approach was developed to teach English language skills to first-year architecture students at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology. The course addressed the problem of native architecture students' lack of training in oral skills and lack of experience in expressing familiar architectural concepts in Western terms, especially in written form. The students used real architectural input for the language classes, working individually, in pairs, and in groups to produce architectural projects from the design classes. By making use of the students' native artistic skills in the design classes and by exploiting their knowledge of concepts in traditional forms in both the design and language classes, the approach builds their understanding of the concepts in Western terms. In this way background knowledge is supplemented with new knowledge, and substantial communication skills are acquired. Appendixes include outline materials for the students prepared by members of the Department of Architecture and examples of student projects. (Author/MSE) |
