| Abstract | Drawing on recent analyses carried out around the world, this paper demonstrates how economic and military insecurity feed on each other in various ways at both national and international levels. Following an introduction, material is presented in three parts. "The Military Sector and the Economy" outlines facts to demonstrate how military consumption of resources that would otherwise be available for economic and social development exacerbates resource-related tensions. Also examined are the hypothesis that military spending is good for the economy, the effect of military spending on inflation, and the economic effects of the arms trade. A second section examines the military's role in governments of developing nations. The third section outlines alternative approaches to security through multilateral initiatives and economic interdependence. (LP) |
