Abstract	Results of a study concerning teaching about the third world in colleges in Massachusetts are analyzed in this third of three volumes. A proposal for an academic certificate program in third world studies is also presented. Sixty colleges and universities in Massachusetts were surveyed (approximately half of such institutions in the state and enrolling 90% of the students). This sample of institutions is characterized as strong in liberal arts, with social sciences and humanities being well represented. The study focused on the extent to which the social sciences are involved in teaching about the third world, as well as the specific roles of sociology and anthropology. Data and narrative sections are presented on the following: population change and density of Massachusetts counties, the ethnic and racial composition of the counties, the percentage of minority and foreign students at 10 "more competitive" and 10 "less competitive" institutions in Massachusetts, and data on the home country of foreign students. It is proposed that North Adams State College establish a program leading to a Certificate in Third World Studies. This would be a one-year research-oriented program, encouraging independent study by students. Features and requirements of the program are described, including proposed courses. (SW)
