Abstract	This report presents detailed social and economic statistics, based upon the Current Population Survey of March, 1983, for the U.S. population below the poverty level in 1982. Poverty data are cross-classified by such characteristics as race, family relationship, type of residence, work experience, and type of income received. Among major findings are that between 1981 and 1982, the number of persons below the poverty level rose from 31.8 million to 34.4 million, and that during this period the poverty rate rose from 14.0 percent to 15.0 percent. Among the factors contributing to the increase were the recession that persisted through most of 1982 and an associated rise in unemployment. The data show that poverty increased (1) among Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics; (2) among all the younger age groups, up to age 55; (3) in all major geographical areas; (4) at a higher rate in central cities than in metropolitan areas; and (5) among families of all types. The data also show that of the 3.7 million poor persons 15 years and older who were unemployed at some time during 1982 (a 14.0 percent increase over 1981), 2.5 million were unemployed 15 weeks or more, an increase of 30 percent over 1981.
