Abstract | This monograph concerns the geometry curriculum as it should be in an effective and complete mathematics program in grades K-9. The first section makes an impelling argument for teaching substantial amounts of geometry in grades K-9: for practical life skills, for developing number and measurement concepts, for problem-solving experiences, for interest and fun, for developing intelligence, and for other reasons. These arguments can be used in curriculum committees examining the curriculum. The second section delineates the goals for geometry instruction. It includes content, awareness, and pedagogical goals. The last section, and by far the most extensive, delineates the scope, content, and sequence in geometry needed to implement the goals in the previous section. It is a blueprint, by grade levels, for the geometry curriculum, with specific illustrations of the content. (MNS) |
