AbstractAttitudes and characteristics of past and current continuing education (CE) students at the College of St. Benedict (CSB), Minnesota, were studied. Attention was directed to reasons for attending CSB, attitudes toward classes and services, and the background and demographic characteristics of CE students. Based on 228 interview and questionnaire responses, findings include the following: more than 95 percent were women; the age range was 20 to 65 years old, with 60 percent aged 20 to 35; two major reasons for attending CSB were to obtain a degree or certificate and for enrichment; important aspects of the college experience included the competence and attitudes of the faculty and the relevance of their studies to their interests; and conflicts between college and family responsibilities or job responsibilities were related to some scheduling problems and withdrawals from CSB. Some differences in responses for day and evening students and for students undertaking specific programs (Certificate in Management for Women and Certificate in Ministry) were also found. Appended materials include: a questionnaire; interview formats; a college admission form; and separate profiles of students in the management program, ministry program, degree programs, and students attending classes for enrichment reasons.
