| Abstract | The impact on the economy of five cultural institutions in the San Antonio, Texas, area was determined by measuring their 1978 direct and indirect financial effects. The institutions are the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Opera, Witte Museum, Museum of Transportation, and the Carver Cultural Center. Data gathered from the six institutions included operating and financial characteristics and total expenditures with local firms. Staff and audience surveys, tax rates and bases for all local jurisdications, local government expenditures, and the number of local housing units were also obtained. Direct local expenditures amounted to $3,736,000. Twenty-five percent of the total went toward local expenditures for goods and services, 40 percent for salaries and wages, 19 percent filtered into the community through local audience spending, and 16 percent through non-local audience spending. Guest artists spent $32,224 locally. Secondary business volume generated by institution-related effects totaled $6,185,000. Revenues to local government from the five institutions came to $807,020 while costs to local government amounted to $859,749. (KC) |
