Abstract | This report presents comparisons of high school students in New York State with those of the United States as a whole and is organized in five sections: the first describes experiences in high school (coursework, grades, vocational training, behavior, school practices, and student opinions on high school); the second outlines activities outside of school; the third discusses the students' values and attitudes; the fourth section describes short-range and long-range plans after high school; and the last examines college plans in more detail. This initial report on High School and Beyond is a summary of descriptive information on high school students. As a large-scale, longitudinal survey, its primary purpose is to observe the educational and occupational plans and activities of young people as they pass through the educational system. The study should contribute to an understanding of student development and of the factors that determine individual education and career outcomes. It is intended that such information will be useful as a basis for review and reformulation of Federal, State, and local policies affecting the transition of youth from school to adult life.
