| Abstract | Project CATCH assessed differences in high school performance and retention among students who applied to vocational high schools and were denied admission, those who applied and were accepted, and those who had not applied. Data were collected from 2,700 intermediate/junior high school students. Students completed a Survey of Choices--perceptions of the application process, attitudes toward starting high school, and area of occupational interest. School records were examined and yielded three matched groups of students--Targets (denied admission), Vocational Controls (admitted), and Academic Controls. High school records of retention, inter-school transfer, subject grades, attendance, and punctuality were compared. At the end of 3 years, students who had left school completed the Job Training Survey; retained students completed a Career Choice Survey. Major findings were that (1) the Survey of Choices showed significant differences; (2) Targets had a high, early dropout rate; (3) on measures of grade point average, pass/taken ratio, and attendance, the Vocational Controls were consistently highest, Targets second, and Academic Controls lowest; (4) Targets' and Academic Controls' occupational training in academic high schools were associated with better retention and higher grade point averages; and (5) at entrance into high school, 95% expressed interest in occupational training.
