AbstractThis report contains the principle addresses on the conference topics of the relationships between education for the professions and practice, and between professional examinations and practice. Remarks of commentators about the addresses are also included. In the first speech, essential components of professional education are discussed. The characteristics of the professional in any field are described. It is pointed out that the state's proper concern in accrediting, licensing, or certifying should be directed toward that part of the professional curriculum which prepares students for a long-term professional career. The relationship of credentialing examinations to professional practice was the topic of the second speech; discussed were the difficulties of developing completely equitable licensing examinations. It was pointed out that, in statutory credentialing (the responsibility of the state regulatory agency), the credential is intended to signify to the public that the state considers the practitioner to be safe to practice. In discussing professional regulation in an age of deregulation, the third speaker says: "The state's concern, either through public or private agencies, must continue to be to assure the public that individuals permitted to practice a profession possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to safely practice that profession at entry level."
