AbstractThe impact of Brown University on the economic base of Providence, Rhode Island and on the state was studied. Data are based on 1978 university and public records and results of a 1976 university survey, adjusted by Consumer Price Indexes. A set of mathematical models was used to measure effects of the university on three major sections of the city and state: business, city and state government, and private individuals. The economic impacts on the business sectors are considered in relation to: university-related local and state business volume; value of local and state business property committed to university-related business; expansion of the state banks; credit base resulting from university-related deposits; and local business volume unrealized because of the existence of university-related enterprises. Governmental impact are examined in relation to: university related revenues received by local and state government; the value of municipal services self-provided by the university; cost of municipal services allocable to university-related influences; value of local government property allocable to the university-related portion of services provided; and taxes forgone through the tax-exempt status of the university. Finally, three main ways that the university affects individuals are through jobs and employment opportunities created, income of individuals from business activities, and goods procured with income from university-related jobs and business activities. Among the findings is the following: total direct and indirect expenditures in Rhode Island attributable to Brown in 1978 were $103 million, of which nearly $62.5 million was spent in Providence alone. Models, estimating procedures, and data sources are described, and a questionnaire is appended. (SW)
