Abstract | Using readings from the book "Popular Writing in America: The Interaction of Style and Audience," this paper examines the parameters of literary style. The paper explores the themes and forms of a number of literary genres and describes the various devices used by authors within the confines of these genres to win and maintain audience interest. In addition to presenting a number of techniques used by authors to manipulate audiences, the paper uses quotations from the readings to illustrate the interplay of stylistic considerations and other compositional elements.
