AbstractThis report describes activities undertaken during Phase I of a two-year project sponsored by the U.S. Office of Education to prepare, evaluate, and distribute a print-based curriculum which will encourage the development of critical television viewing skills in teenagers, and to develop television viewing skills guides and workshops for parents and educators. Organized according to the five major tasks proposed for the first phase, the report contains sections on: (1) curriculum development, including discussions of preliminary activities, materials development, and materials revision; (2) evaluation and field-testing of the curriculum, with a consideration of the formative evaluation plan prepared for the project by the Educational Testing Service (ETS); (3) planning for the printing and distribution of the curriculum materials; (4) development of television viewing workshops for parents and teachers; and (5) management and reporting during the project. Among the many items appended are bibliographies on critical television viewing skills for teachers, parents, and students; a filmography on critical television viewing; the ETS evaluation plan; press releases and press clippings relating to the project; and materials for teachers and parents from a television viewing workshop held in Flint, Michigan.
