AbstractThis guide presents a framework and offers alternatives for developing a logical and consistent K-12 social studies scope and sequence. Although written for use by Connecticut educators, the guide can be used by educators in any state. There are nine sections to the guide. Section one contains a definition of social studies. Section two deals with the curriculum development process and includes a discussion of needs identification, school and community relationships, implementation, and evaluation. Rationale and goals are discussed in the third section. Section four deals with the content of the social studies. Discussed are the social science disciplines, skills, and values. Patterns and construction of scope and sequence are the topics of section five. Section six examines many different types of instructional techniques, including lecture, directed discussion, case studies, games and simulations, and independent study. How to select instructional materials is dealt with in section seven. Evaluation and implementation of the guide are the topics of section eight and nine respectively. Included in the appendices are many useful materials including the names and addresses of professional organizations that can provide assistance to social studies curriculum developers, policy statements concerning teaching about controversial issues, sample history objectives, and affective teaching models.
