| Abstract | The major purpose of this guide is to provide structure for the establishment of regional graduation ceremonies for adults completing adult basic education (ABE) and adult education programs in the many small communities located in 13 counties of western Kentucky. Reasons given for conducting a regional ceremony include heightening public awareness of adult education programs in the rural area as a means of increasing enrollments into adult programs, increasing faculty visibility, and providing a significant culminating event for those adults now in the program. A series of specific steps are divided into three phases of operation to include before, during, and after ceremony activities. A 1980 ceremony involving 90 adult award recipients on the Murray State University campus is described. A 32-item checklist, with suggestions for implementation, guides planning activities before the ceremony. Similar checklists for conducting the ceremony (nine items) and closure, follow-up (six items) are provided. Appendices include: samples of letters of invitation to adult students, ABE faculty, and V.I.P.s; attendance forms; special recognition form; letters of appreciation to volunteers; awards recipient instructions; congratulations letter; and certificate of achievement. Sample programs for three graduation ceremonies conclude the document. (BRR) |
