Abstract | This handbook offers an organized program to expose kindergarten and elementary school students to the values inherent in participation in a competitive society. It encompasses activities that develop skills in mathematics, language arts, health and physical education, science, social studies, art, and music. Objectives and activities pertaining to the Olympic Games are integrated into the subject areas and skills usually taught in the classroom. Each unit covers specified grade levels and presents purposes and objectives of several subject areas in terms of cognitive and attitudinal outcomes and skills development while incorporating concepts and activities which deal with the Olympics. The activities consist of suggested procedures for the teacher and directions and questions for the students. In addition to the references found at the end of most units, a comprehensive general bibliography is provided. The book is prefaced by a brief history of the ancient Olympic Games, and how the modern games came into being. (JD) |
