AbstractIntended to chronicle the still-emerging concept of career education, this monograph contains 10 papers prepared during the 1979-80 academic year. In the first paper career education is discussed in terms of its role in developing employability/adaptability/promotability skills. The strong emphasis in 1979-80 on making career education a community effort rather than an effort of the education system alone is the focus of four papers dealing with service learning and career education, the National School Volunteer Program and career education, career education in urban settings, and linking guidance efforts with community organizations. Also discussed is the concept of career education as a vehicle for educational change (in a paper on career education and social studies). Career education's concern for extending the concept of career education to all segments of the population is illustrated in papers on the career education of the visually handicapped, career education in community colleges, contributions of career education to reducing youth unemployment, and career education's role in combating bias and stereotyping. (The first four monographs in this series are available separately through ERIC--see note.) (MN)
