AbstractThe intent of this curriculum guide is to help students understand the relationship between actions and values. The document is the fifth-grade component of a teacher-developed K-eighth grade crime prevention program. General objectives of the program are to promote and maintain positive student attitudes and behavior, to assist students in meeting their responsibilities, and to help insure the safety and welfare of self and others. Specific objectives of this component are to help fifth-grade students distinguish between positive and negative solutions to conflict, examine the necessity for laws, gain a basic understanding of crime resistance, and learn about simple and safe home security measures. Material is organized in three main categories--Understanding Self and Others, Understanding Society, and Understanding Safety and Crime Resistance. Students are involved in a wide variety of activities, including discussing personal values, playing a values matching and ranking game, performing a play based on the choice between responsibility and irresponsibility, completing a fill-in puzzle about anger, reading and analyzing stories about conflict resolution, completing creative writing assignments, completing charts correlating rights and responsibilities in various areas, expressing opinions about laws, defining terms such as 'victim' and 'vulnerability,' and making lists of things to do to make sure a house will be safe when the occupant is away. For each activity, information is presented on objectives, procedures, and background. Also included are worksheets, blank spaces for teacher's notes, supplementary materials lists, and a glossary.
