AbstractThis document is the first-grade component of a K-eighth grade program on crime resistance. Major objectives of the program are to help teachers develop and implement a curriculum which promotes and maintains positive student attitudes and behavior, assists students in meeting their responsibilities, and helps students insure their own and other people's safety and welfare. Specific objectives of this component are to help first-grade students compare their feelings with other people's feelings, be responsible, seek positive solutions to conflict, learn the necessity for rules, emphasize safety, deal with strangers, understand the concept of authority, become familiar with the use of the telephone in emergency situations, and understand simple and safe home security measures. Activities suggested to reinforce these objectives include making lists of positive and negative feelings, role-playing different feelings, discussing concepts such as responsibility and conflict, analyzing common conflicts and consequences, creating home and school responsibility charts, playing educational games, developing a set of rules for the classroom, singing songs based on safety, reciting and analyzing a poem about police officers, thinking critically about wise and unwise actions in situations involving strangers, learning safety rhymes, and dramatizing stories emphasizing safety measures ("Goldilocks and the Three Bears," and "Little Red Riding Hood," for example). For each activity, information is presented on objectives, materials, procedures, teacher background, and reinforcement questions. Student worksheets are provided wherever necessary and blank spaces for teacher's notes are included at the end of each activity. The unit concludes with a student reading list, a resource directory, and a glossary of terms. (DB)
