Abstract | This report of the hearing before the Senate Committee on Aging concerns the question of aging and its effects on learning and working. Statements by witnesses are recorded to present the results of ongoing longitudinal studies focused on the effects of biological aging and the measurement techniques used to analyze variables associated with learning and working abilities. Techniques of assessment used by the Soviet Union where older workers are a necessary part of the labor force are also reviewed. The report by the Director of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) differentiates chronological age from biological age, psychological age, intellectual age, and social age. The director of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging describes the investigation of individuals across the entire adult lifespan. Similarities of studies, information sharing between studies, and commonalities of traits associated with long life are presented. The appendix contains a compilation of national and international longitudinal studies in chart form, listing the studies, the institutions involved, the year begun, and the years in progress as well as the sample, emphases, and goals of the studies.
