| Abstract | The 1980-81 costs of tuition, required fees, and room and board at state and land-grant universities are examined, with two-year comparisons presented for median undergraduate charges and median graduate and professional studies charges. Fifteen-year trends of median charges for undergraduate tuition and fees (1965-80) are presented along with ranges for 1980-81 undergraduate charges, highest and lowest charges for 1980-81 undergraduate tuition and fees, and full-time undergraduate charges for 1980-81 by institution and state. Regional comparisons of 1980-81 median undergraduate tuition and fees are also considered. Among the findings are the following: (1) resident dentistry led graduate and professional tuition hikes; (2) 25 campuses held the line on tuition compared to 49 last year; (3) the trend in ranges of charges reflects inflation; (4) the long-term median tuition rise outstripped the rise in the Higher Education Price Index; and (5) the median total undergraduate charges rose less in 11 years than the Higher Education Price Index. Campuses that raised tuition and those that did not are identified along with the actual resident tuition and fees of the highest- and lowest-charging institutions. (SW) |
