Abstract | The purpose of this bulletin is to assist Alabama administrators, supervisors and teachers in providing a kindergarten program of learning experiences appropriate for 5-year-old children. The bulletin is divided into six sections encompassing different aspects of kindergarten education. Ten goals for the kindergarten program are suggested in Section 1. In Section 2 the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and language characteristics of the 5-year-old are discussed in narrative form and then presented in convenient charts together with implications for the teacher. The section on the program (Section 3) offers suggestions for physical facilities as well as for developing habitual behavior patterns, deep appreciations, wholesome attitudes, creative expression, independent thinking and problem solving via narrative and charts organized in terms of knowledge and understandings, skills, attitudes, and implications for teachers. How parents can become involved in the teaching-learning process is explored in Section 4. The final sections (Sections 5 and 6) are concerned with practical aspects of organizing the kindergarten such as administration, staff, budget, safety and public relations, and the necessity for a continuous developmental program. A bibliography is provided for each section and a list of professional organizations and additional sources of information is appended. (Author/RH) |
