Abstract | The formal and substantive traits of the television program, "60 Minutes" reflect characteristics manifest in Daniel Boorstin's conception of the "pseudo-event." Through both the verbal and visual imagery presented in the context of a narrative format, this television news magazine illustrates the significance of mass media artifacts as "rhetorical document." The program, because it is inherently a value-oriented interpretation of the world, engages in a selection of reality and therefore, a deflection of reality. The linguistic and visual imagery helps to shape the viewer's perceptions of ideas, people, and institutions through the dramatic portrayal of events that both reflect and act upon the climate of opinion of the times. "60 Minutes" represents an end product that is the result of intersubjective agreement between the researchers, writers, correspondents, producers, and camerapersons responsible for this genre of media rhetoric. The verbal and visual imagery represent linguistic/graphic patterns that project perceptual images from rhetor to auditor. (Author/FL) |
