AbstractDesigned as Phase I of a project directed toward the eventual establishment of multi-purpose, cooperative, local organizations concerned predominately with the socio-economic development of low income rural families in northwest Florida, this survey project was conducted in six counties which were selected according to rurality, incidence of poverty, and racial composition. Identification was sought of the perceived institutional and individual incentives and constraints which affect the adoption of new ideas and economic practices by rural low income families. In order to develop profiles of psycho-socio-economic resources of the target population, a 3-part pre-tested, questionnaire was used by trained field researchers in face-to-face interviews with 586 heads of households. Computerized analyses of the findings revealed 21 background, behavioral, attitudinal, and psychological characteristics which were typical of the low income population. Attitudes and receptivity of the population generally indicated a positive atmosphere for the introduction of new ideas and increased job opportunities. (JD)
