| Abstract | This booklet discusses the issues surrounding the increasing presence of black students in institutions of higher education and the responses of those institutions to the issues. The concerns discussed include issues of access, admission, academic success, supportive services, black faculty and staff, special programs, and financial aid. Few solutions or answers to the problems have emerged, yet educators are seeking models for institutional responsiveness. The presence of black students in higher education has provided the impetus for general institutional reform and redefinition of purpose. Although much remains to be accomplished, some notable progress has been made in the struggle for equal opportunity. (Author/MK) |
