AbstractResearch identified leader skills and leader-group interactive processes that have potential influence on unit performance in tactical situations. An historical review of the leader research literature was conducted, and leader models from leader research along with theory from industrial, managerial, and academic settings were reviewed. The problem-solving approach was found most relevant for addressing the skills and demands placed on leaders. Both it and research on communications aided in delineation of leader skill categories. From historical engagement simulation (ES) data (battle narratives, audio tapes, and net control sheets collected at ES exercises), the literature search, and research staff ES combat experiences, a listing of leader skill categories and individual leader skills was developed. The twelve skill categories, subsumed under five broader headings, were (1) management skills--planning, execution and control, initiating structure, and interacting with subordinates and supervisors; (2) communications skills--transfer of information and pursuit and receipt of information; (3) problem-solving skills--identification and interpretation of cues, weighing alternatives, and choosing a course of action; (4) tactical skills--application; and (5) technical skills--equipment and basic. Appendixes include a leader skills matrix, leader observation checklist, and a subordinate questionnaire. (YLB)
