| Abstract | The results of a survey of cooperating teachers indicate that they favor a certification requirement for supervisors of student teachers. Most believed that a teacher should have at least three years of teaching experience and demonstrated teaching competence before becoming eligible for training as a cooperating teacher. Aspects of certification should be handled by the local school district and the colleges. Many cooperating teachers expressed concern about the usefulness of courses taught by the colleges, feeling that they may be too abstract and theoretical. The cooperating teachers saw certification as a method to standardize much of the student teaching field experience, to eliminate weak cooperating teachers, and generally to improve the quality of the student teaching experience.
