AbstractThis curriculum program is intended to promote the development of primary grade children's ability to think. A number of learning activities or tasks are presented along with the teaching strategy to be used in implementing them. The first part of the book describes aspects of the teaching strategy, including selecting activities, preparing for listening and thinking, modeling, checking and probing understanding, and remediating. The learning tasks are presented in five units, each of which is introduced by an index identifying the purposes of tasks in each section of the unit. Unit I focuses on the development of basic concepts (and, or, not, same, etc.) and such skills as observing, describing, finding out, giving instructions, getting information, detecting incongruities in explanations, and suggesting rational explanations. Unit II deals with inferencing, determining relevance, selecting from among alternatives, classifying, determining sequences, recognizing differences, and introducing and applying concepts of set. Unit III presents tasks related to inferencing, using relevant information to find answers, developing the concept of intersecting set, and determining simple analogous relationships. Unit IV deals with predicting, determining relevance, and using alternative ways to solve problems. Unit V looks at identifying problems, suggesting solutions, considering novel uses, the concept of mutliple membership in a matrix, and the concept of subset. (JMB)
