AbstractThe two volume report presents the final report and appendixes of a project concerned with developing career opportunities for handicapped persons. Entitled "A Career Accessibility Model for Special Needs Individuals," the project's approach was based on the application of job redesign and job enrichment principles within ten national or multiregional firms for the purpose of determining employment opportunities for educable mentally retarded persons. An operational model was developed, analyzed, and refined, producing 38 career options suitable for the target population. The documented approach was found to be an alternative to job development for special needs persons, and the work with employers was found to have a positive impact on their attitudes toward providing career access for the handicapped. The model was field implemented in four schools in Massachusetts and two in New Jersey, and the demonstration approach yielded much supporting evidence that the various conceptual aspects of the model (generic job development, local job development, related instruction, parent communication, placement, and followup) were important ingredients in a comprehensive career preparation and implementation strategy for handicapped persons. As a result of the implementation of the Career Accessibility Model, several special needs students were placed in cooperative work experiences previously not considered. One school system adopted the Career Accessibility Model as a comprehensive approach to career preparation for its handicapped students. Appendixes include samples of information generation, examples of development of composite job descriptions, samples of new job options, and various other reports and forms. (Author/DLS)
