Abstract	This is an investigation of the notion of language for special purposes and a discussion of the topic from the point of view of reading comprehension and its pedagogical implications. The meanings, connotations, and inadequacies of the terms "langue de specialite" and "Language for special purposes" are discussed. A distinction is made between students learning a foreign language as they are learning new subject matter, and students learning a foreign language when they are already familiar with the subject matter. A reading comprehension course for anthropology students is described and, and as a result, a new emphasis is put upon the cognitive field of a discipline rather than on the language pertaining to it. Finally, a distinction is drawn between two types of reading, namely, a "poorer" one with only surface understanding of the facts and opinions exposed and a "richer" reading where the reader grasps all the implications and connotations present in the original literature.
