Abstract | The four articles in this volume address themselves to issues in the teaching of English for science and technology (EST). H.G. Widdowson, in "EST in Theory and Practice," argues that teaching that is not informed by a functional approach to language can oversimplify pedagogical problems. "Designing English for Science and Technology (EST) Programmes," by Keith Jones and Peter Roe, places the problems in designing EST programs within the context of broad educational development consideration. J.R. Ewer, in "Teaching English for Science and Technology: The Specialised Training of Teachers and Programme Organisers," urges the recognition of teacher education in EST as the key priority in the short and medium term. Finally, "Developing Study Skills in English," by Christopher N. Candlin, J. Michael Kirkwood, and Helen M. Moore, examines the historical and theoretical background relevant to the problems of developing study skills in English. (JB) |
