AbstractThe guide presents lesson plans and a bibliography emphasizing children's books as a tool for exploring citizenship concepts. Aimed at grades K-3, the objective is to suggest children's books and ways to use them in teaching law and citizenship responsibilities as related to five basic topics: equality, power, justice, property, and liberty. The document is divided into two main sections. Section I offers step-by-step lesson plans illustrating ways the books can be used in introducing societal values and good citizenship attitudes. Each topic is treated by listing skills, vocabulary, needed materials, educational objectives, and procedures to be followed. Various kinds of simple self-expression are recommended, including drama, role play, and puppetry. A chapter on making and using puppets is included in this section. Section II is a bibliography, designed as a supplemental reading list of books with law and citizenship-related themes. It is presented in four parts. The first part lists books used in the model lesson plans, noting author, title, and publisher information. The second, third, and fourth parts suggest additional books related to the five basic topics for grades K-3, 4-6, and 7-8. They are arranged according to topic and keyed to the educational objective they best illustrate. Author, title, and publisher information is listed for each book. (CK)
